| ” Lifting her chin, I looked at her ” I walked up to her ” “God, that is so cheesy We stood in the comfortable silence, Nia looking at the water, and me at the moon ” She looked at Nia ” I sat and thought about what she just said Shit I was not in the mood for this “You’re called the merry-go-round’, because all the guys that get on ride for free “Yeah, I’m fine “…Nina A real date “Are you crying?” I turned and looked at Nia I looked at everything as I thought But I’d rather be known as a nobody than to be called the campus ‘merry-go-round’ Nia didn’t want anything to eat and neither did I; we’d had a large dinner prior to deciding to see the movie The radio was on during the drive and Nia sang along to the songs she knew “It happens to the best of them ” “You aren’t nobody ” “Nia, whether you see it or not, we do have a label ” Again, we sat in silence This movie was amazing She looked a little surprised that I’d shed a tear I couldn’t lie ” “What?” “Go out on a date with me When I got there, Nia was no where in sight “Why not?” “What if this doesn’t go someplace good? I’m happy with where we are because we don’t know where ‘we’ are I want to see where this goes A lot “Are you done?” Nia looked at Amanda with a bored look “Look, I may be a ‘nobody’… All four of us know that “Yes…” Amanda nodded silently then looked at Paul I kept walking “Hey, Jase…” Paul looked at Nia Only you I held her silently for a long while ” She walked away “Look, I’m going to keep walking ” “What if Amanda was right? What if we don’t fit?” “Then we don’t fit ” “What I said?” “Yeah “Nia, are you ok?” She turned slowly We’d decided to take a drive to the next town over because she wanted to see a re-screening of one of her favorite movies, The Green Mile “Look, I’m sick of not saying what everyone else wants to ” “She needs to do more than walk She was a mean son of a bitch when she wanted to be Wow ” We got the tickets and found seats in the theater But she smiled “Nia, I like you ” She turned back to face the water “Amanda, shut up ” I hugged her a bit tighter ” “What are you talking about?” Amanda gave Nia a confused look “Oh, you don’t know…” She gave Amanda a cruel smile “Jason?” “Yes?” “Do you think that heaven is where the one moment where a person is happiest is played over and over again? That heaven is that one moment in a person’s life where nothing else mattered, just how happy they were?” “Yes, I think so “Yeah… It’s sad that in the end, he died anyway “I want to see this movie “I may be a nobody, but I’m a nobody that doesn’t like to be pushed “Is it true, Jason? Is that what they call me?” I looked over at Paul and then back at Amanda “Ok “Yes “Yeah, you know… Tits and ass… Things that go boom…” She was right, those were my kind of movies but since I met Nia, my eyes were opened to a wider span of things… I wanted to see things that meant more than just some special effects show “So that’s a yes? You’ll go out with me?” She broke free and sat on the grass I found her at the pond ” I stopped just outside of the theater and gave her a kiss The guy that all the girls want to be with and who all the guys want to know Sitting here with you, right now… this my moment, Jason ” Paul beat me to the punch I’d never been more at peace You want to come?” “No, that’s alright “Go out with me “Jason, I’m sorry if I hurt her feelings “I want to see this movie with you ” Amanda gave Nia snide look I was too shocked to “Getting help from some nerdy nobody is fine but damn Jason, don’t try to make her fit in your world… Come to think of it, so was I I took her hand in mine as the movie began and I didn’t let go ” Nia corrected him with a hard tone of voice ” “Yeah ” “Yes, I know, but she’s your friend-” “Baby, it’s over She rested her head against me I knew that, Jason knew that,” She looked and Paul ” I held her face in my hands I’d never seen it but hearing Nia talk about it earlier in the day, I was highly interested Nia looked back at Amanda This was my moment too “And she’s some girl no one knew existed until you asked her to help you with some work for a class “You’re Jason Reese, the big man on campus I never knew that Nia had that in her “We can go watch some movie that’s more you She stood at the edge quietly, watching the water And for the sake of everyone else, don’t try to fit in hers… You’re the beautiful ideal male body type and she’s the fat plain jane “Yeah, sure “I didn’t know you had that in you “We’re going to Mark’s room “I want to go back to my room * * * * * I was taking a walk with Nia the following night when I saw Paul and Amanda coming toward us I didn’t move I looked around, at the moon, the stars, the slightly swaying trees, the still pond I looked over at Amanda ” She looked at the ground as she said, “I don’t I’m taking a walk with Nia ” “Nia “Jase, I’m sorry…”He put his arm around her shoulders and they started to walk ” We walked to the car and just decided to drive around for a while before I walked her back to her room ” “All you did was tell her what she didn’t know I want to be with you ” He looked at me ” She chuckled a bit ” She took a hold of my hand and we walked out of the theater I like the fact that this doesn’t have a label ” He turned to look at me Chapter 6 “Are you sure you want to watch this movie?” Nia looked pretty apprehensive as we got out of the car ” “More me?” I took a hold of her hand as we walked through the parking lot of the theater ” She looked back at me “At least now I know that you have a soft spot ” She said that like I’d just told her the worst joke ever “And I’m sure you knew that too, didn’t you, Paul?” Paul remained silent “Happy riding She had what it took to be a singer if she wanted Her eyes were teary ” She looked at Paul I sat behind her and held her close ” She looked over at me From the second it started up until the last moment, I was blown away “This is my moment ” She looked at me You can stay and talk to your friends The movie seemed to go in a blur ” She sat silent for a minute ” She looked at Nia once more ” I kissed the side of her face ” Nia leaned up and wiped my tears away “No matter how you look at it, no matter how much you’ll try, you two don’t fit…” I was raised to never hit a woman but man, I was about to break that rule ” “Ok, let’s go “I suggest you stay out of other people’s affairs when you aren’t even aware of your own She started humming Take My Breath Away lightly to herself It was a while before the silence was broken again ” She smiled I was trying to figure out what just happened as I walked to the fountain But right the, I was content to be her audience “Are you sure?” “Yes “Look, I’d rather not fit with you than fit with a girl like Amanda ” “Jason-” I turned her to face me The faint smell of vanilla washed over me Again, she rested her head against me and she took my hand in hers I walked behind her and wrapped my arms around her That was all I needed |
